FREE Checklist for Starting Your Own Collection Agency

Use this page as a worksheet as you start your own debt collection agency. Before you quit your "day" job you can take these steps to be prepared when you open your agency.
 

Research collection agencies online and in your area. See what services they offer and what they charge.
Start buying office supplies and setting up your office.
Come up with a company name and register that name with your state.
Once you have a name, open a bank account and PO Box.
Create letterhead, business cards, promotional materials and a tag line.
Write a business plan.
Write a marketing plan.
Join credit & debt collection associations to see what they offer and how you can learn more about the industry.
Join local associations such as the Chamber of Commerce or a Rotary club.
 Research skip tracing options.
 Research bonding, licensing and insurance.
Research or create a website.
Read magazines and books regarding debt collection and credit policies.
Apply for a Federal Employer Identification number using form S4 at www.irs.gov/pub
Research debt collection software.
Create a list of potential clients.
